Is Ulster-Scots not just slang? |
|||||||
The construction of the above question ('is...not' as opposed to 'isn't...') appears to indicate that Scots has an influence on even the most Standard Ulster English, so it can hardly be passed off as just slang. In fact, one of the strongest arguments for raising its profile and accepting its language status is that it has its OWN slang. Words such as clok 'face' and cooter 'nose' are slang terms, so-called 'Gutter Scots', whereas fisog and neb might be considered 'Guid Scots'. Sometimes the word shared with English is actually considered a slang or low register term, such as forget, where the 'Guid Scots' would be loass mind (literally 'lose mind') or misremember. |
